How to Install a New Door: A DIY Enthusiast's Guide

Installing a new door is a great way to update the look and feel of your home. It can also be a relatively easy project for DIY enthusiasts. In this article, we will walk you through the steps involved in installing a new door, from measuring and cutting to hanging and installing the hardware.

Materials and Tools

Before you get started, you will need to gather the following materials and tools:

  • New door
  • Door frame
  • Hinges
  • Doorknob or handle
  • Strike plate
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Saw
  • Hammer
  • Screwdriver
  • Sander (optional)

Step 1: Prepare the Door Frame

The first step is to prepare the door frame. If the old door is still in place, you will need to remove it. Once the old door is removed, clean the door frame with a damp cloth.

Next, you will need to measure the door frame. Use a tape measure to measure the height and width of the frame. Once you have the measurements, you can use a saw to cut the new door to size.

Step 2: Install the Hinges

Once the door is cut to size, it is time to install the hinges. The hinges should be installed on the door frame, about 18 inches from the top and bottom. Use a level to make sure that the hinges are level.

To install the hinges, first drill pilot holes in the door frame. Then, use screws to secure the hinges in place.

Step 3: Hang the Door

Once the hinges are installed, it is time to hang the door. To do this, first insert the door into the door frame. Then, use a hammer to tap the door into place.

Once the door is in place, check to make sure that it is level and that it opens and closes smoothly. If the door is not level, you can use shims to adjust it.

Step 4: Install the Doorknob or Handle

The final step is to install the doorknob or handle. To do this, first drill pilot holes in the door. Then, use screws to secure the doorknob or handle in place.

Step 5: Install the Strike Plate

The strike plate is the part of the door frame that the doorknob or handle latches into. To install the strike plate, first measure the distance from the edge of the door frame to the center of the doorknob or handle. Then, mark this location on the door frame.

Next, drill a hole at the marked location. Then, insert the strike plate into the hole and secure it in place with screws.

Step 6: Sand and Paint (Optional)

If you want to, you can sand and paint the door frame and the door. This is not necessary, but it can help to improve the appearance of the door.

Step 7: Enjoy Your New Door!

Once you have completed all of the steps, you can enjoy your new door!
